Liz Borrett did it again!

November 19

After winning her age division at the Boston Marathon earlier this year, she did the same again earlier this month at the TCS New York City Marathon. In doing so, the 75 year old improved on her Boston time by over 5 minutes, clocking 4:16:39 in far from ideal conditions.

Borrett has only been running for 11 years, taking up the sport when she was 64. She regularly competes in the Canadian Tire Interior Road Race Series, frequently recording the best age graded performance.

Congratulations Liz!

November 12

Race directors and club reps are invited to join a workshop mapping the future of the IRA. The burning question to be answered: how can the IRA best support runners, member clubs, and running, in the southern interior of BC? Topics of the workshop will include:

  • What is the mission of the IRA?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the IRA?
  • What will be the minimum standards for new races wishing to join the IRA calendar?
  • How do we enhance the value of the series races to encourage more runners to participate?
  • How do we get out the message about the great races we have in the series?

The workshop will take place Saturday, November 29th, 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm at Okanagan College Vernon Campus, room E102. A light lunch will be available. Please RSVP, including any dietary requests, prior to Wednesday, November 26, 2014.

31st Memorial Larry Nicholas Cross Country 9K

October 13

Many thanks to Shawn Baenziger for his interview with Donna Nicholas about the Larry Nicholas memorial bursary.

Charming teahouse helps receiving donations
Bursary for sports and outdoor education and recreation

Going to Donna Nicholas’ house is like entering into another world, a world we only know from fairy books and never thought it would exist in our hectic world. In the back of her main house stands this beautifully adorned teahouse with a welcome gate and smoke billowing out of the chimney on this cool fall day afternoon.

Sitting at the top of the table, looking at you with vivid eyes, carefully thinking what to say, her answers often interrupted with a hearty laugh, Donna explains and tells how she has been augmenting the Larry Nicholas bursary for more than 30 years, often funded by donations she receives at her charming teahouse.

Donna Nicholas is the hub and center of the Larry Nicholas memorial bursary that was established in 1983 by Dennis Zahara after the tragic death of her son Larry and his friend Dick in a mountain climbing accident. The money has been invested by the Central Okanagan Foundation and the money earned distributed by the Central Okanagan Bursary and Scholarship Society to applying students form graduating classes of School District 23. Every year, the successful applicant may receive around $ 500 for sports and outdoor education and recreation.

The main contributor to the bursary is the Kelowna Running Club with the annual Larry Nicholas memorial cross country run. “I want to ensure that the numbers of runners are kept up,” Donna says. “With the continuation of the bursary it was like Larry’s life made somehow a contribution and young people will benefit from it. I cannot fully express my gratitude for the Running Club having done this every year.” Donna Nicholas was an enthusiastic runner herself, running all 11 series races, 6 cross country races and 2 marathons in 1999, being awarded the runner of the year title in that year.

“Larry really loved running,” Donna says. “I want the Larry Nicholas run to be affordable.” This year’s entry fee for the Larry Nicholas run is set at $ 12 and will hopefully again attract more runners, keeping the bursary growing and the memory of Larry Nicholas alive.

Chip timing

September 10

We've had a great response to our chip timing survey - we'll be leaving it up for a few more days so if you haven't had a chance to complete it in yet, please take the opportunity. We really appreciate any feedback we get!

Peak to Beak

September 05

Fall is definitely in the air so the P2B goes on September 21. The route is the same as last year so you can enjoy all the Valley has to offer from Mountain to Lake to Kalamoir Park and of course the vineyards and the vista at Quails’ Gate finish line. With the recent rain, Knox Mountain Park should have the fire ban removed and the Yacht Club construction should not interfere with your run along the Boardwalk. All is looking good for a challenging but great run.

There are already more than 50 runners registered and we again have a bottle of wine for the first 100 runners registered before the 17th. Register on Zone4 click here.

Any questions? Contact Trevor Haaheim at (250) 863-5884 or myself at the number below.

PS: If you are bringing your fans along, we can always use more volunteers.

Cheers!!

Attention Cross Country Runners!

August 23

John Machuga, president of the Okanagan Running Club, has kindly offered to lead a series of 5 workouts this cross country season starting Saturday September 13th. They will be in Polson Park in Vernon at 10 am every Saturday until October 11th. Workouts will be running in the mud, similarly to the Provincial and National Championships. Looking for help with PR

February 26

We have many wonderful races in our series! They are well organized, well timed and very well priced. Many of these races have been held for 20-30 years, and we believe that it's time to put some excitement back into them. With all the competition from big for profit runs these days we need to let more runners know about our races. About how much fun they are, and that they are for anyone, not just the serious racer. We feel that where we fall down is in our approach to PR and advertising. Race directors are usually too busy to get involved in PR, and, let's face it, sometimes we just assume that because the race has been held for so many years that 'everyone' knows about it.

With these thoughts in mind we are planning to hold a seminar on March 15, in Kelowna, to focus on getting our races more exposure in the media. Heading up the discussion will be John Wilson, webmaster IRA and KRC websites and Shawn Baenziger, editor KRC website (www.kelownarunningclub.com), all of whom have had experience in dealing with the media, and know what the media wants.

This seminar is open to all. If you enjoy writing e-mails, perhaps have a knack with words, and would like to help out your club but haven't a lot of time to spare, this could be perfect for you. Topics will include -

  • Current promotion of events and clubs
  • Successes and lessons
  • Options for publicity
  • Online promotion and social media
  • Offline campaigns
  • Working with teams and volunteers
  • Promotional strategy and schedule
  • Analyzing success
  • Exercises in promotion
  • Web technologies and working with Content Management Systems
  • Sports photography and video
  • Writing and publicizing a sports story
  • Setting up promotional schedule for 2014
  • Developing a media directory for promotion

The workshop will take place from 10:00 until 16:00 with lunch provided by the IRA. Participants are encouraged to bring any examples of promotional media that is of interest.

Message Bill Stephens for the location if you are interested in attending.

Call for volunteers

February 15

Racing season is just starting up, and at all the IRA racing locations, we are looking for people who might be interested in helping out with timing. If you or someone you know has some interest, there will be opportunities for 'at-race' and off-site instruction at beginners levels. For those of you who love supporting the local running scene, it's a fantastic way to give back. For more information, contact RJ Dueck at Dueck.rj@gmail.com or any of the local race directors.
