Starting Block 1OK Race Report

Liz Borrett, Runner of the Year in 2011, announced her intention to contend for the Muckle-Gader Age Graded Award in 2012 by smashing her own age-group record of last year by over 3 minutes in handing Cindy Rhodes (F55-59) a rare defeat in age-graded results. Borrett (F70-74) recorded 53:31 for 48th place out of 119 women finishers, good for an outstanding 33:24 best overall age graded time, while Rhodes ran 41:21 to finish 3rd overall, good for 34:22 and 2nd A-G. Kelowna's Jessica Hannah (F30-34) was first woman finisher, recording 40:29 for 16th overall, and Heather Johnson (F30-34) was 3rd in 41:14. Diane Leonard (F65-69) of Kelowna took 3rd A-G with 36:34 from 52:13 clock time.

The best road conditions since the race moved to the Lavington course resulted in seven new age group records, including Hannah, Rhodes, Danita Schreiber in F45-49, Astrid Varga (F60-64), Bryce Turner(M<16) and Jack Miller (M65-69).

On the men's side, Jeff Symonds' streak of four straight wins ended as he opted to run the First Half in Vancouver, where he set a PB of 1:07:42 in finishing 3rd. John Machuga, (M30-34) back in Kelowna, and back in shape after a sojourn in the lower mainland in 2011, bested Hans Aabye (M34-39) 34:35 to 35:05 in taking his first overall win at the SB10 since 2005. Local runner Trevor Jordan outlasted Sergio Pio to take 3rd overall and first in M45-49 but the older Pio edged him out 33:40 to 33:49 to take the age-graded title in quest of his second Greenaway Cup. Jack Miller was 3rd at 33:55, (44:31 clock time).

The weather co-operated, with sunshine and above zero temperatures, and two bald eagles surveyed the finish from their perch in a big cottonwood tree. The Kal RATS club with race directors Ginny Sellars and Krys Pick and a big crew of volunteers put on their usual polished performance with lots of good food and prizes. The next race of the series is the Lakeside 5K in Penticton; see you there.
